Popular in Europe, Trab skis are now available in the U.K. Trab skis have a reputation for quality and reliablity and are justly popular amongst Guides and Ski mountaineers.
The Trab Duo Freerando is a great value randonee ski, ideal for the cost conscious Ski Mountaineer looking for a stand alone light weight touring set up. Constructed from an aero wood core and a carbon glass torsion box, the Freerando is torsionally stiff, with the a shallow side-cut. This combination of stiffness and side-cut means the Freerando is great at holding an edge on icier terrain. The shallow side-cut also helps to prevent the ski tip breaking through crust aiding floatation. These skis are suited to both Alpine and Telemark set-ups.
Teamed up with a Dynafit Vertical ST bindings, a pair of 171 cm Trab Freerandos weigh only 3.55 Kg. When mounted with a pair of Fritschi Eagle bindings, they weigh in at a respectable 4.46 Kg per pair.(both binding types include the weight of ski brakes).
For Free Ride/Off Piste skiing. The Trab Duo Freerando is a great lightweight Ski Mountaineering ski with a narrower foot print. As such it is not the best choice for a general Free Ride ski. If you are looking for a lightweight ski that will cope with Ski Mountaineering and Free Riding, it is worth considering the Trab Volare and the Scott Crusair.
For Ski Mountaineering. The Trab Duo Freerando is an ideal ski for Ski Mountaineers wanting a stand alone, dedicated touring ski that is not going to be used in resort. the longer radius on the Trab Duo Freerando means there is less side-cut. This delivers more edge contact on steeper, icier, exposed slopes. It also means the ski handles better in breakable crust. The only choice now is Dynafit or Fritschi bindings ! Avoid the basic Dynafit TLT Speed bindings and the Marker (made from nylon) Tour TR12 bindings which have a few durability issues.
For Telemarking. The Trab Duo Freerando is suitable for both beginner and advanced Telemarker Tourers, wanting to travel in alpine terrain. The Trab duo Freerando is better used as a stand alone Telemark touring ski as it lacks the qualities needed for piste performance. If you are looking for a ski that will also cope with Telemark Freeriding and off piste skiing, it is worth considering widwer skis such as the Trab Volare or Scott Crusair. These skis work well with Rottafella NTN or Cobra telemark bindings, they also work well with 7TM Power Tour bindings.
For Resort/Alpine Piste skiing. Around resort, the Trab Duo Freerando lacks stiffness and vibration damping and will be a disppointment to people looking for performance on hard packed, groomed pistes. This is a fantastic Ski Mountaineering ski but is not intended for general piste skiing.
