Updated last season, the Fritschi Free Ride Pro is the most robust and reliable Ski Mountaineering binding available. Fritschi Ski Mountaineering and Free Ride bindings are the world's most popular and justly so. There have been many imitators but few - if any have made the grade ! The Fritschi Free Ride Pro is the intelligent choice for Free Ride/Off piste skiers and Ski Mountaineers looking for the ultimate binding for all-round use and all-mountain access. The main difference between the Fritschi Free Ride Pro and previous Fritschi bindings, is a new pivot point, approx 6mm further back than previous models. The new pivot point is now in the same position as the Dynafit binding system, this puts your weight further forward over the toe of the binding, making skinning more efficient. It is also an advantage when traversing or plodding along on flat ground. The rear lever is now similar to the Fritschi Eagle and is much easier to opperate with a ski pole than previous versions. The Free Ride Pro is light in weight, robust, with a number of width options for both brakes and ski crampons. Spare parts for this binding are widely available through out Europe and the US, some spares are even available in mountain huts especially in Switzerland.
Safety. Unlike Dynafit bindings, the Fritschi Ski Mountaineering bindings have both toe and heel safety releases. This makes Fritschi bindings much safer particularly if you are using them on crowded pistes. The Fritschi Free Ride Pro enables skiers to remain in the bindings when changing between ski and walk mode, an important feature for glacier travel where crevasses are present. This is not possible with competing bindings from Marker. The climbing aids can be opperated by the user with out the assistance of a friend standing next to you loading an avalanche prone slope. It is almost impossible to opperate the climbing aids on Marker bindings with out assistance.
Ski Compatability. Fritschi Free Ride Pro bindings are compatible with most skis with a flat top deck and generally work better than Dynafit bindings on skis over 100mm underfoot as they are torsionally more rigid and deliver better edge to edge power transmission.
Durability. Fritschi Free Ride Pro bindings are the most robust and reliable Ski Mountaineering bindings available. Unlike Dynafit TLT bindings, the Fritschi Free Ride Pro is suitable for a mix of all-round use, piste , off piste and Ski Mountaineering. Avoid the basic Dynafit Speed and Marker Tour TR series of bindings as they have a few durability issues.
For Ski Mountaineering. The Fritschi Free Ride Pro skis incredibly well offering superior edge to edge power transmision compared with other binding makes. The ski/walk mode can be opperated with a ski pole with out having to get out of the bindings and the climbing aids are easilly opperated without assistance. If you are looking to use your set up for every thing, piste, off piste and Ski Mountaineering, then the Fritschi Free Ride Pro is the best choice. Avoid the Marker Tour TR series as they have had a few durability issues.
For Free Ride/Off Piste skiing. The Fritschi Free Ride Pro is the best choice of binding for Free Riders and off piste skiers also wanting to do a lot of Ski Mountaineering as they are more durable than both Dynafit and Marker bindings. This is particularly important if you are intending to use your ski set up for piste and lift served off piste skiing. If you are not intending to do any Ski mountaineering and your off piste skiing involves minimal skinning then it might also be worth considering Marker Baron/Duke bindings as they do not suffer from the durability issues that the Marker Tour TR series have.
The crampon for the Free Ride Pro is the only thing we have a minor issue with, however it is an easy problem to solve. Fritschi have over complicated the design of the crampon, the crampon has a hinge. The plastic teeth aren't great at keeping the metal blades locked in place and the hinge tends to slacken causing the blade to drop into the vertical position as the binding is lifted. The fix for this is to epoxy resin the hinge perminently shut, thus preventing the problem from occuring.
