The Fritschi Eagle is one of the safest, most reliable Ski Mountaineering bindings available. The Fritschi Eagle is built on the same platform as the Fritschi Free Ride Pro but uses lighter toe and heel components to reduce the overall weight of the binding. The Fritschi eagle replaced the older style Fritschi explore. The main change between the Explore and the Fritschi Eagle is the new pivot point, approx 6mm back compared to older versions. The new pivot point is now the same as the Dynafit binding system, this puts your weight further forward over the toe of the binding, making skinning more efficient. It is also an advantage when traversing or plodding along on flat ground. Fritschi have also added a sprung locking mechanism to the back of the binding, similar to the one used on the Free Ride Pro. Fritschi supply the Eagle binding with 80mm brakes, wider brakes are available as an optional extra. The Fritschi Eagle and the Fritschi Free Ride Pro are not only the most reliable and robust Ski mountaineering bindings available, they are also some of the safest as they have a safety release at the front and rear of the binding. They total weight for a pair of Eagle bindings is 1.96 Kg. The brakes can be removed to reduce weight bringing the overall weight per pair down to 1.72 Kg.

Safety. Fritschi Ski Mountaineering bindings are some of the safest available. The Fritschi Eagle has a front/toe and a rear/heel safety release making this binding a better, safer choice than Dynafit bindings for slightly weaker skiers. Weaker skiers tend to fall more often and have slower speed falls, increasing the risk of injury by not releasing from the bindings. For this reason we recomend bindings that have both toe and heel safety releases for weaker skiers and all-round use as the risk of injury is less likely.

Ski Compatability. The Fritschi eagle is compatible with most skis, generally performing well on skis upto 100 mm under foot. For skis over 100mm the Fritschi free Ride pro is a better choice as it has more lift and better edge to edge power transmission. If you are intending to use your skis for all-round use, piste skiing, off piste skiing and ski mountaineering, the Fritschi Free Ride Pro is a better choice as it is more robust.

Durability. Fritschi Ski Mountaineering bindings are the most robust and reliable available. They put less stress on ski boots and tend to be much more durable than Dynafit TLT bindings. Avoid the marker Tour TR series of bindings as they have had a few durability issues.

For Ski Mountaineering. We tested the Eagle for 3 weeks the season before its' launch, including a week long ski mountaineering trip in the Piz Bernina area. The Eagle really is a vast improvement on the Explore. The design of the rear locking mechanism is much easier to open with a ski pole than earlier versions. We also found the new pivot point an improvement particularly when plodding on flat terrain.
The Fritschi eagle is a better choice for weaker skiers as they are less likely to injure themselves compareseThe crampon was the only thing we had a minor issue with, however it is an easy problem to solve. Fritschi have over complicated the design of the crampon, the Eagle crampon has a hinge. The plastic teeth aren't great at keeping the metal blades locked in place and the hinge tended to slacken causing the blade to drop into the vertical position as the binding lifted. The fix for this is to epoxy resin the hinge perminently shut, thus preventing the problem from occuring.

For Free Ride/Off Piste skiing. The Fritschi Eagle is not the best choice of binding for general Free Ride/Off piste use. The Fritschi Free Ride Pro or Marker Baron/Duke are a better choice as they have better edge to edge power transmission and have less movement/wobble side to side than the Eagle and Dynafit bindings, offering better performance.

For Resort/Alpine Piste skiing. If you are intending to use your ski and binding on piste regularly, the Fritschi Free Ride Pro is a better choice than the Eagle as it is more robust and has better edge to edge power transmission.
