Dynafit TLT Radiical ST Ski Mountaineering Bindings : One of the lightest FreeTour binding in the world

New this seasn, the Dynafit TLT Radical ST is the next binding up in the range from the Dynafit TLT Vertical ST. The Tour Lite Tech (TLT) Vertical series blends the light weight technology of their tried and tested race bindings in to this stronger, more, reliable general use model. One of the main differences between the Vertical ST and the TLT Radical ST is a new design of toe piece. The new design enables easier entry into the binding, particularly if your boots have the genuine Dynafit Quick step fittngs on the toe (These are only available on Scarpa and Dynafit Ski boots). There is also a new attachment point for ski crampons. Another main differnce between the Vertical and the Radical ST is the climbing aid on the heel unit. Previous models of Dynafit binding required the user to twist the heel unit round to different positions where as the TLT Radical ST has a simple fold over climbing aid that is easier to opperate. The Dynafit Radical ST still uses the light weight 4-point fastening system and low standing height above the ski. The boot-ski-binding torque created by this system is less than that of traditional ski bindings and Fritschi and Marker Free Ride bindings but this is generally not a problem on Ski Mountaineering skis. The crampon attachments are also much stronger than the weak/poor attachments on the Speed and Comfort bindings, meaning they won't let you down when it counts. This version of the Vertical ST comes fitted with either 82, 92, and 100 mm brakes, wider brakes are available on request but we recomend other bindings for skis over 100mm under foot. Sadly Dynafit being Dynafit, could not produce any test bindings for the two industry ski tests in March and April so none of us have actually managed to ski this new binding.

A lightweight binding for optimal Free Touring fun.

Safety. None of the Dynafit Tour Lite Tech bindings have a forward safety release at the toe, for this reason, Dynafit bindings are not as safe as other bindings. Dynafit TLT bindings are best used by stronger intermediate and advanced skiers. Stronger skiers are less defensive in their technique and tend to have higher speed falls, increasing the likely hood that they will release from the bindings, reducing the risk of injury. Weaker skiers tend to fall more often and have more slower speed falls, increasing the risk of injury, by not releasing from the bindings. For this reason we only recomend bindings that have both toe and heel safety releases for all-round use as the risk of injury is less likely.

Ski Compatability. Dynafit Tour Lite Tech bindings work well with skis up to 100mm under foot. This is the tipping point where the Dynafit TLT bindings reach their limit and performance starts to drop off. Dynafit bindings suspend the boot on pins creating less contact between the boot and the binding, this reduces the torsional rigidity of the boot and binding system. This reduced torsional rigidity creates wobble/play reducing power transmission between boot and ski causing a slight reduction in control and performance, the wider the ski, the more noticable this is. The hole pattern on Dynafit bindings and the contact of the binding with the ski is quite narrow, this creates more stress/leverage when used on wider skis increasing the chance of the binding ripping off the ski. To answer some of these problems, Dynafit have launched the TLT Radical FT, which has a wider hole pattern and more lift from the surface of the ski. For skis with 100mm or more under foot we recomend using the new Dynafit TLT Radical FT, Fritschi Free Ride Pro or Marker Duke/Baron bindings. Avoid the Marker Tour TR series of bindings as they have had a few durability issues.

Durability. Dynafit Tour Lite tech (TLT) bindings are light weight Ski Mountaineering bindings. Light weight comes at a price and in the case of Dynafit bindings it is durability. Dynafit bindings are not robust enough for general piste and lift served off piste skiing, being more prone to damage than other bindings. We get more requests for Dynafit binding spares than any other make of binding and spares are not easy to get hold of. Most of the customers asking for spares have been using the bindings for more than just Ski Mountaineering. After a lot of use, pin bindings also tend to put a lot of wear on the pin fittings on the toe of the boot. Several guides we work with retire their Dynafit compatable boot and binding after 2 seasons as the pin holes on the boot are worn and lots of components on the bindings are starting to wear out. For most of these guides, 2 seasons is the equivalent of approx 8-10 months skiing.

For Ski Mountaineering. The Dynafit Vertical series has been the most reliable of Dynafit's Ski Mountaineering bindings. The TLT Radical ST is robust enough for general touring use and is very reliable when used purely as a stand alone binding for Ski Mountaineering. However this reliability is compromised when the bindings are used for something they were never designed to do, piste skiing and lift served off piste skiing. The light weight nature of the Dynafit TLT bindings makes them great for Ski Mountaineering but it is this light weight design that makes them less durable particularly for resort skiing. That said, Dynafit Ski Mountaineering bindings will cope with a couple of days resort skiing at either end of a ski tour. If you are looking for one ski and binding to do every thing, Dynafit bindings are the wrong choice as thay are not as safe and are more prone to damage. For all-round use, we recomend Fritschi Free Ride Pro bindings as they have toe and heel release and are far more reliable and rubust. Avoid the Marker Tour TR series of bindings as they have a few durability issues.

For Free Ride/Off Piste skiing. The Dynafit Tour Lite Tech bindings are not robust enough for general lift serverd Free Riding and off piste skiing, so if you are intending to use them as your one and only set up, they are the wrong choice. Dynafit bindings are better used as a stand alone set up on another ski when you have a different ski for general resort use. Fritschi Free Ride Pro and Marker Baron/Duke bindings are a better buy if you want one set up to do every thing.

For Resort/Alpine Piste skiing. Dynafit TLT bindings are light weight Ski Mountaineering bindings and are not particularly durable for general resort skiing. For general resort use we only recomend the safer bindings with toe and heel safety releases. For general use we recomend standard ski bindings such as the basic Salomon/Scott or more robust Dynastar/LookPX12 Lifter bindings. If you need a binding with a treking facility Fritschi Free Ride Pro or Marker Baron/Duke bindings are also suitable.

NB - MOUNTING BINDINGS Dynafit bindings must be mounted with the correct Dynafit jig, otherwise the alignment and spacing between toe and heel of the binding can be difficult. We can only mount Dynafit bindings if we have a ski boot, as the boot is needed to adjust the mounting jig. The Dynafit mounting jigs have a problem, they mount the binding in the wrong place on the ski causing the center point marking on the boot and ski not to line up correctly. For this reason a boot is needed to get the binding in the correct place on the ski. If you are buying Dynafit bindings via mail order, please make sure that the workshop fotting the binding has a genuine Dynafit mountaing jig and they know about the positioning problem.
