Learning from some of the mistakes made in the design of their Free ride boots, Black Diamond have produced a good Ski Mountaineering boot in the Quadrant. A performance 4 buckle Ski mountaineering boot constructed from Pebax nylon, the Quadrant is based on a new fit last from Black Diamond. This new fitting last answers some of the critisms assoiated with Black Diamond Factor Free Ride boots. Customer feed back about the Black Diamond Factor tells us that the boots have too liitle volume in the toe box and the inners do not offer enough insulation, something Black Diamond freely admit. By comparison, the Black Diamond Qudrant has much more volume in the shells, most noticably in the depth of the toe box. This has allowed Black Diamond to use a slightly thicker but more importantly a much warmer innerboot in the Quadrant. We are told it is going to take a couple more seasons before we see some of the design improvements used in the Quadrant used in Black Diamond's Free Ride boots.
For Ski Mountaineering. The Black Diamond Quadrant is a good, technical, 4 buckle Ski Touring boot. Realatively light in weight, the Quadrant weighs in at an impressive 3.43 Kg per air (Mondo 27). 4 Buckle boots of this type, tend to offer a better fit and more skiing supprot than their 3 buckle equivalents. The Black Diamond Quadrant like the Scarpa Maestrale has one of the best walk ranges we've seen in recent years making the boots more comfortable when off the skis on long walk outs and scrambling over morrain.
The Black Diamond Quadrant works well in Fritschi bindings but is also compatible with the less durable Dynafit TLT bindings. Black Diamond do not use genuine Dynafit components so the Dynafit Quickstep fittings are not available on the Quadrant, making the boots less easy to fit in Dynafit bindings than the Scarpa Maestrale and the Dynafit Zzero 4. The Black Diamond Quadrant is suitable for a mix of Ski Mountaineering, Off Piste skiing and occasional piste use.
For Free Ride/ Off Piste skiing. The Black Diamond Quadrant is softer in flex than the Garmont Radium and the Scarpa Mobe, something that aggressive hard charging Free Rider may wish to take into account. For less aggressive skiers however the Black Diamond Quadrant is suitable for use primarily as a Ski Touring boot as well as Off Piste skiing. The main difference between a true Free Ride boot and the Quadrant is the stiffness of the flex and the forward lean angle of the cuff. Although the Quadrant is Dynafit compatible, please be aware that Dynafit TLT bindings are not as durable or reliable enough for use as your one and only binding, they are however reliable when used as a stand alone Ski Mountaineering binding on a second ski.
