New last season, Backcountry Access launched the long awaited DTS Tracker 2 avalanche beacon. The new BCA Tracker 2 is a vast improvement on the basic DTS Tracker. Backcountry Access really did revolutionise transceivers when they launched the first version of their now famous DTS Tracker. In recent years however, the Tracker technology and software has been surpassed by units such as the Mammut Pulse and the Arva Link. So it is great to see BCA building on their heritage and developing this new unit which puts them right back in the running with the competition. The main improvement on this unit over older models is the addition of a third antenna, vastly improving location times in the final search phase.
The BCA DTS Tracker 2 is a tripple antenna unit, opperating on a single digital signal. The third antenna greatly increases accuracy for the final pinpoint search, (a big improvement over older 2 antennae Tracker units). The other important feature of 3 antennae devices is that they avoid the problem of confusing signal spikes caused by deep burial situations. The unit gives real time distance and direction information in order to home in quickly during the initial search phase.
The BCA Tracker 2 functions like a traditional transceiver, taking the rescuer to the burried victim along flux lines. This means that the tracker 2 is similar to the Arva Axis and the mammut Barryvox Element so it is not as fast in the final search phase as the Arva Link and mammutPulse which take rescuers in a straight line to the victim. With multiple burials, users can mark the first buried victim and go easily to the next closest buried victim. The unit provides an estimate of the number of buried victims (1 or multiple victims). Comes with holster and batteries.
The Backcountry DTS Tracker 2 is a great choice if your budget won't stretch to the Mammut Pulse or Arva Link. The Tracker 2 still retains the simple user interface of the original DTS Tracker, great for those of you that struggle with over complicated software.
